Is everything I share during therapy confidential?

There are some limitations which include, if we believe you are in danger, a child is in danger or the law provides a subpoena that requires disclosure. However, we only provide the minimum required information. If you are beginning therapy with court involvement, please share this with your therapist. Please review our Confidentiality & Privacy Policies Page

How do I know if I need therapy?

Therapy is a wonderful tool regardless. Therapy provides a safe space to understand yourself, manage life's challenges, and grow emotionally and mentally. However, if you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, you have a big decision coming up, you may feel less satisfied with situations in your life, you feel emotionally drained — or just need someone to talk to — therapy can help. You don’t have to wait for a crisis. Preventative care is good care! Meet Our Team and see who may be a good fit for you!

What qualifications do your therapists have?

All our therapists are licensed professionals with specialized training and experience in various areas of mental health care, some include; EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), cognitive-behavioral therapy, trauma recovery, attachment repair, parent child interaction, parts work, body - mind - spirit approaches, hypnosis, Rieke, DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), EFT (emotionally focused therapy) and more. Meet Our Team and see who may be a good fit for you!

Do you offer online therapy or telehealth sessions in Iowa?

Yes, we offer both in-person and secure online sessions to make care accessible and flexible based on your comfort. We have many locations to choose from in person. Check out our Locations Here.

How long does therapy usually last?

The length of therapy depends on your personal goals and progress. Some people benefit from short-term support, while others may prefer ongoing sessions. A typical 'hour' session is 53 minutes, which allows your therapist to complete the administrative tasks related to the visit and receive the next person. Some sessions are shorter or longer depending on goals and scheduling. Talk with your therapist to determine what the correct choice is for you.

Does MOSAIC Family Counseling Center provide psychological evaluations or testing?

We do not offer psychological testing.
Our clinicians conduct psychosocial evaluations during your intake appointment. These are holistic conversations — not standardized tests — designed to help us understand your mental, emotional, physical, and social well-being. If you have had a psychological evaluation from another provider, we can communicate with your other provider in service of developing a comprehensive holistic plan for you.

A psychosocial evaluation helps us:

Understand your unique story and current stressors

Identify your strengths and support systems

Co-create goals and a treatment plan that works for you

Give you space to express what you want from therapy

Does MOSAIC Family Counseling Center only offer family counseling?

Don't let the name fool you! — our name reflects our belief in connected healing, not a limit on who we serve.
Our therapists work with individuals, couples, families, and groups. We offer inclusive, trauma-informed care for a wide range of mental health needs — from anxiety and grief to identity, life transitions, and more. Visit Our Services page to explore all offerings.

Do you offer therapy for kids and teens?

Yes, we provide therapy for children and teens in our office, in select schools, and, when appropriate, through secure online sessions. We believe that parental involvement is a vital part of a child’s therapeutic journey, and we actively collaborate with parents or caregivers to understand their child’s needs and develop meaningful, age-appropriate treatment goals. Our approach is compassionate, collaborative, and tailored to support the emotional and developmental well-being of each child and teen we serve.

MOSAIC Family Counseling Center Inc., also responds to the Des Moines Public Schools Student Assistant Program (SAP).

What is EMDR therapy, and how can it help me?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps individuals process and heal from distressing experiences by using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements. While it’s widely known for treating trauma and PTSD, EMDR is also effective for a range of issues including anxiety, depression, phobias, low self-esteem, grief, performance anxiety and more. By targeting unprocessed memories and emotional blocks, EMDR helps reframe negative beliefs and reduce emotional reactivity, allowing you to feel more in control, present, and empowered in your everyday life. It is based on the Adaptive Information Processing Theory that says we are affected by past events that become stuck in the emotional centers of our brain. EMDR helps our brain process and update that information so our emotions, thoughts and behavioral responses are healthier and more inline with our personal values. Check Out This Video

Do you offer culturally responsive therapy?

Yes — at Mosaic Family & Counseling Center (MFCC), culturally responsive care is foundational, not optional. We strive to honor each person’s identity, lived experience, and cultural context in every therapeutic relationship.

What “culturally responsive care” means at MFCC

Recognizing that race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability, socioeconomic background, immigration status, and other identity markers shape how clients experience life, stress, resilience, and healing

Being mindful that power, privilege, bias, and systemic oppression affect mental health access, trust, and outcomes

Holding humility and a growth mindset: we view cultural responsiveness as an ongoing learning process — not as a checkbox or fixed state

Do you offer faith-inclusive therapy?

At Mosaic Family Counseling Center, we honor and welcome the diverse spiritual, religious, and faith traditions our clients bring into the therapeutic space. Some of our clinicians specialize in faith based, bible based and spiritually based counseling. Although, not all of our clinicians specialize in faith-based counseling, we are all comfortable integrating what is important related to spirituality, personal values, and belief systems into the therapy process when it aligns with the client’s goals. Whether your healing journey is grounded in a specific faith tradition, spiritual practice, cultural worldview, or personal philosophy, we strive to provide respectful, inclusive care that reflects and supports the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.

Does insurance cover therapy MOSAIC Family Counseling Center Services in Iowa?

Yes. Here’s what to know:

Coverage varies by clinician. Each of our therapists may be paneled with different insurance companies. Please check our team page or contact us directly to confirm whether your clinician is in-network with your plan.

Some services may not be covered. Services such as EMDR Intensive Therapy, parenting education sessions, consultations, or workshops are often not covered by insurance plans. These may be considered self-pay services.

Your insurance determines coverage. Your insurance provider ultimately decides which services are covered and whether your clinician is eligible under your plan. We always recommend verifying your benefits directly with your insurance company before starting services.

Deductibles and co-pays still apply. Co-pays, co-insurance, and deductibles are the client’s responsibility. Please keep in mind that most insurance plans reset deductibles and out-of-pocket limits at the beginning of each calendar year.

If you have questions or need help understanding your coverage, we’re happy to assist you as best we can. Our goal is to make access to care as smooth and transparent as possible.

Common Concerns Related to Cultural Responsiveness & How We Address Them

“Will my identity be stereotyped or pathologized?”

We commit to client‑led exploration of culture and identity. Clinicians are trained to resist assumptions and explore gently rather than impose narratives.

“What if my background is very different from my therapist’s?”
Our clinicians provide space for you and your therapist to explore how differences may impact your therapy and what makes you comfortable. While we match thoughtfully whenever possible, difference doesn’t preclude empathy, the ability to hold space for how backgrounds affect the relationship or the effectiveness of the therapy.

We encourage open dialogue about cultural differences and you may feel free ask for clarifications and feedback if something feels off.

“How do you ensure consistency across clinicians?”
Cultural responsiveness is embedded in our core values, training curriculum, supervision framework, and performance evaluation. We support peer consultation, case discussions, and shared learning.

How you can contribute to culturally responsive care in your therapy

Share your preferences (such as how you prefer pronouns to be used, what cultural values matter to you, how your family or community influences you)

Let your clinician know if something in therapy feels culturally insensitive or off — we welcome that feedback

Ask about your therapist’s approach to identity, bias, and cultural humility if you like

Recognize that the therapeutic relationship is co‑created — your voice, agency, and identity shape the work
