EMDR Intensive Psychotherapy Program

Transformative Healing, Accelerated Progress

Personalized, trauma-informed care: No two clients are alike. Your therapist will collaborate with you to select—and adjust—the right mix of approaches over time, ensuring therapy fits your needs, honors your identity, and supports lasting growth.

Our EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Intensive Psychotherapy Program is designed for individuals seeking deep, focused trauma healing in a shorter period of time.

Whether you're dealing with anxiety, complex trauma, depression, grief, or unresolved past experiences, this accelerated format offers a powerful and time-efficient alternative to traditional weekly therapy sessions.

What is EMDR Intensive Therapy?

EMDR Intensive Therapy condenses months of traditional therapy into a series of extended, immersive sessions over the course of a few days or weeks. Using the evidence-based EMDR approach, clients are guided through targeted trauma processing in a safe, supportive environment—allowing for deeper healing at a faster pace.

EMDR Intensive Therapy is tailored to your specific needs and goals, and includes:

A comprehensive assessment and personalized treatment plan, continual assessment of affective tolerance.

Sessions may last 3 - 8 hours with 3 to 6 weeks between each session, depending on individual goals and scheduling needs. This time between is meant to allow the brain time to assimilate change, identify areas of healing, continued needs and see progress in behaviors and emotional responses.

The number of sessions depends on the depth of the work you are doing and your goals. Often times there are 3 to 4 Intensive Sessions with 1 hour check ins in between each encounter.

If you are traveling in from out of town, sessions can be scheduled for up to 3 consecutive days at a time.

Those who travel in must have an agreement with a therapist in their area. This will ensure the ability of optimal integration of the intensive work.

Pre- and post-intensive support to ensure integration and continuity for those participating from Iowa.

Coping tools and grounding strategies to use between sessions. You must agree to engage in specific self care activities in between sessions and after. These tools will help with optimal integration of your work.

Why Choose an EMDR Intensive?

Many clients choose EMDR intensives when:

Traditional weekly therapy isn't progressing fast enough

They're preparing for or recovering from a major life event

They want to resolve longstanding trauma more efficiently

They're limited on time or travel from outside the area

They prefer a more focused, immersive healing experience

This format is ideal for high-functioning individuals who are motivated to heal and ready to engage in focused therapeutic work without the stop-and-start of weekly appointments. It’s especially beneficial for those who may feel stuck in traditional therapy or are seeking faster results due to time constraints, upcoming life transitions, or a desire to make meaningful progress quickly. It’s well-suited for people who have identified specific issues they want to target and who are emotionally stable enough to manage deeper processing in an accelerated setting, with the support of a skilled EMDR therapist.

If you feel you would benefit from Intensive EMDR Therapy, you will need to be aware that Insurance does not cover this service. It is an out of pocket expense. Upon request you will be provided a Superbill you can submit to your insurance company for the service.

Know your Risks of Engaging in Intensive EMDR Sessions

While EMDR Intensive Therapy can be highly effective and transformative, it's important to understand that, like all forms of trauma-focused therapy, it may come with certain risks.

Due to the accelerated and immersive nature of intensives, individuals may experience heightened emotional responses during and after sessions, including increased anxiety, fatigue, irritability, or vivid dreams as the brain continues to process trauma. The deep work involved can temporarily stir up unresolved emotions or memories that may feel overwhelming without adequate support. It is a good idea to clear your schedule after the intensive and prioritize rest and self care so integration can take place.

Additionally, because intensives condense a significant amount of therapeutic work into a short time frame, emotional integration may take more time. For this reason, EMDR intensives are best suited for individuals who have a strong support system, solid coping strategies, motivated to engage in recommended self care activities, and are emotionally stable enough to engage in deep processing. It is imperative that you engage in the thorough screening, preparation, and follow-up care process to ensure emotional safety and well-being throughout the process.

What is an EMDR Intensive Session Like?

After the first intake and screening session, you and your therapist will engage in the 8 phases of the EMDR Treatment Procedures. We will review coping activities meant to assist your readiness to engage in therapy from a resourced and resilient state. Then a personalized plan that targets the issues you want to focus on by reviewing memories and events in your life that have contributed to the symptoms we are working on. We then process each targeted event until resolved and you have an adaptive view of not only the event but your view of self related to the events. We will check progress at every visit and identify changes that have occurred during the interim between sessions, and complete processing of every target you have identified. Often we will integrate activities or approaches that will add benefit and assist integration to your healing such as, emotionally focused therapy (EFT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), transpersonal psychotherapy (TP), Play Based approaches Ego State work, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills, mindfulness-based approaches, hypnotherapy if you would find it helpful, and trauma-informed, culturally responsive care. We focus on practical tools you can use between sessions and a therapeutic relationship.

What kind of training does the EMDR Intensive Therapist Have?

All of our EMDR therapists have completed Basic EMDR training, ensuring a solid foundation in this powerful, research-backed modality.

Therapists who offer EMDR Intensives have gone even further — they are certified EMDR clinicians who have spent years applying EMDR in both traditional and intensive settings.

Through this extensive experience, they’ve witnessed firsthand the meaningful transformation clients can achieve with focused, immersive work.

These clinicians haven’t just met certification standards — they’ve pursued advanced training beyond certification to deepen their skillset, allowing them to support clients safely and effectively through deeper processing.

They are attuned not just to technique, but to each client’s pace, emotional needs, and readiness.

Is it Worth it?

This level of focused care is immersive for both the client and the therapist — requiring deep presence, attunement, and sustained energy throughout the process— it’s intensive on both sides.

That’s why these sessions carry a higher cost and are not typically covered by insurance. But for many, the value far outweighs the expense. Clients often report significant breakthroughs, emotional relief, and lasting progress in far less time than traditional weekly therapy.

The immersive nature of this work allows you to stay in the healing process without interruption, which means you can go deeper, resolve core issues more efficiently, and walk away with clarity, empowerment, and renewed capacity for the life you want to live.

Rather than stretching out your healing over months or years, EMDR Intensives offer the opportunity to make real, meaningful change now — freeing you from the weight of trauma, anxiety, or stuck patterns that have held you back.

The payoff isn’t just symptom relief; it’s reclaiming your sense of security, identity, purpose, and possibility. It’s an investment in your future self — in a version of you who feels more whole, more at peace, and more able to move forward with confidence.
